CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — The Craven County Health Department was notified of a raccoon that tested positive for rabies in Vanceboro on Tuesday.

The racoon was found on Maul Swamp Road and is the third rabid racoon confirmed in Craven County this year.

If a person was exposed to infected saliva or bitten by this animal, contact their local healthcare provider for a rabies risk assessment. Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva.
