KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Officials at the Lenoir County Jail announced that an inmate, 56-year-old Michael Waters, was pronounced dead around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Detention officers were alerted to a medical emergency Waters was having. The officers responded to his cell and began administering first aid. EMS was called, as was the facility nurse.

While receiving aid, they said Waters became unresponsive and went into cardiac arrest. Medical care was unsuccessful and Waters was pronounced dead.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating. Waters was being kept in the jail for a domestic assault charge under a $1,500 secured bond.

Preliminary information received by the LCSO indicates Waters’ death was of natural causes.
