JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The New Bridge Street Project in Jacksonville started back in 2023 and was expected to be an 18-month project.

City leaders said things like tropical storms and bad weather have slowed the process down. They now said the work is supposed to be done by the end of this year.

Crews are now making progress on the landscaping of the new medians and new stormwater pipe installations.

“The goal of the project is to update infrastructure and we wanted to install larger storm drains which will help reduce flooding especially during heavy rain events,” City of Jacksonville Project Manager Christy Baysden said. “The goal of the project is to update infrastructure and we wanted to install larger storm drains which will help reduce flooding especially during heavy rain events. We also want to update the water and sewer structures that were deteriorating, as well as, providing ADA improvements, as well as, being overall a more inviting area for citizens and business owners of Jacksonville.”
