DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina Central University officials Sunday confirmed four people were wounded by gunfire as a second active shooter alert was issued Saturday night in a second round of gunfire during the university’s homecoming.

Following an active shooter alert at 7:43 p.m. and an arrest that ended that alert at 8:11 p.m. Saturday, more gunfire was heard just before 9 p.m., N.C. Central officials said.

Four people, including one NCCU student, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds near the Student Services Building located on Eagle Campus Drive, officials said late Sunday morning.

The campus was placed on lockdown until the NCCU Police Department issued an all-clear on campus at 11:48 p.m. The four people who were shot were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, N.C. Central officials said.

Police said both shootings were unrelated.

The first gunfire incident happened at 7:38 p.m. at Debra Saunders-White Residence Hall parking lot at 2103 Fayetteville St.

On Saturday until 10:30 p.m., N.C. Central said there were various homecoming events. The university played Morgan State in a homecoming football game that started at 3:30 p.m.

Officials said the suspect in the initial gunfire report is in police custody.

N.C. Central officials said that “100 sworn law enforcement and uniformed security officers from multiple local and state agencies” were on campus during Saturday’s homecoming events.

No information has been released about the person who is in custody.
