Imagine perfectly seasoned chuck patties grilled to juicy perfection. Then, we top ours with a cool and spicy avocado relish with sliced jalapeños for a kick. A slice of American cheese adds a touch of creamy indulgence, while fresh cilantro and tomato slices add brightness. When making this California burgers recipe, you should first get good quality ground beef. The key here lies in the lean to fat ratio; look for a blend with enough fat content (like 80/20) for juiciness. Additionally, you can use lettuce instead of buns for a healthier alternative — click to learn more about lettuce wrap burgers. Tell us below your favorite burger toppings!

    • 2 ripe avocados, chopped
    • ½ small onion, diced
    • 1 jalapeno, diced
    • 1 lime, juiced
    • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
    • ½ tsp. salt
    • 2 lbs. ground chuck
    • 2 Tbs. canola oil
    • 6 slices American cheese
    • 6 hamburger buns, spilt
    • 1 bunch watercress
    • 2 tomatoes, sliced

    Instructions

Prepare grill for medium-high direct-heat cooking. In bowl, mix first 5 ingredients and ⅛ tsp. salt; reserve. Divide meat into 6 portions; form each into ¾” thick patty. With thumb, make depression in center of each patty.

Brush burgers with oil; sprinkle with remaining salt. Grill 3 min.; flip. Cook until no longer pink in centers, about 4 min., or until desired doneness, topping with cheese and covering during last 1 min. cooking. Place burgers in buns with watercress, tomato and reserved avocado relish.
