How to Prevent Concealer From Creasing Under Eyes: 4 Tricks for Women Over 50

Concealers do a lot of heavy lifting in our makeup routine. They cover up discoloration from dark circles, redness and more along with any blemishes. But if you’re like us, concealer creasing under eyes is the bane of your existence. It doesn’t matter how little under eye concealer we apply or how meticulously we blend the light layers, we’re often still left dealing with pesky creases. So we scoured TikTok for the simple solutions that thwart creasing from the get-go. Read on to see the tricks for using under eye concealer and setting it properly.

What causes concealer creasing under eyes?

Professional makeup artist Saj Mack shares why using concealer in the under eye area is tricky in her video below. She mentions that since our eyes are so expressive and a lot of movement happens in this area, creasing is so common when wearing concealer. Makeup doesn’t always stay put and the natural shape and folds around eyes don’t help either, no matter your skin type or skin tone.

With all of that said, the top two culprits of concealer creasing under eyes are applying too much product and not setting concealer properly. All it takes to conceal under eye shadows is one small drop of concealer, which is why it’s best to start with a little and add more as you go if needed. And to help with the latter, see the helpful tricks below.

How to prevent concealer creasing under eyes

Keep scrolling to see the genius strategies that keep concealer looking smooth underneath eyes.

    1. Prime under eye skin

The same primer that you use on your face or eyelids can come in handy underneath the eyes as well. That’s because it fills in any creases and gives the concealer something to hold onto so it won’t settle into lines. Two primers that we like are e.l.f. Cosmetics Power Grip Primer and Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion .

Or another option is to apply Aquaphor prior to using concealer, which we know sounds crazy! Celebrity makeup artist Scott Barnes swears by this trick, which he showcases in the TikTok below. The thick emollient ointment fills in creases and hydrates skin, but the key is to use a very small amount and let it set for a few minutes before applying concealer.

Either way, an eyeshadow primer, eye cream or a skin care product that’ll hydrate the dry skin underneath your eyes will make a big difference.

    2. Dip concealer in loose powder

While this sounds kind of wacky and you might think powder will only make fine lines underneath eyes look more prominent, dipping concealer into loose powder before applying under the eyes actually works. As shown by TikToker @jadesiian in her video below, there’s not a crease in sight.

Curious why this trick works? Many makeup formulas, even liquids, contain powders as they provide a blurring or smoothing effect and help products adhere to skin better. So adding powder in with your concealer prior to sweeping it onto the under eye area locks the color into place. Tip: This trick works best with concealers that have a doe foot applicator, which keeps the technique less messy too, as shown in the video above.

    3. Set under eye concealer with setting spray

Using setting spray on the under eye area both before and after concealer application can make a huge difference in keeping your eyes crease free. Makeup artist Vincent Ford gives a tutorial of this trick in his TikTok below. Not only will this lock in the formula, but it also stops concealer from settling into lines.

    4. Trade a brush for a powder puff when setting with powder

The idea with this is that a brush isn’t as dense as you need or apply as much concentration of powder as you need to thwart creasing. Enter a powder puff, like, which TikToker @slaybyjess mentions in her video below.

Also smart? Make an “O” with your mouth so the skin under the eyes is taut, then apply powder. As the video above also mentions, this sets concealer without creases from the get-go so makeup stays looking smooth.
