This Woman Found a Touching Sign of Her Father’s Presence Through Unexpected Coins: Her Angel

    By Maggie Dillard,

My father was a blue-eyed, redheaded Irishman who had a very dry sense of humor. His one beef was anyone who touched his hair. He was known as DoDaddy to his 20 grandchildren.

As the grandchildren were growing up, they would share with DoDaddy details about their new jobs or their promotions, raises, etc. His pat answer was, “Can you lend me 37 cents?” All of the grandchildren got this response and one of them once sent him the requested 37 cents.

Dad lived to age 86. He had been suffering from prostate cancer and, in the summer of 1987, he underwent two weeks of radiation therapy. He was very tired, but as a private person, he kept it to himself.

One day when one of his granddaughters was visiting, he was complaining about the summer heat. Hoping to distract him, she said, “DoDaddy, just hold on, you will soon be 87.” He responded dryly, “I don’t want to be 87.”

She Uses Her Gift for Painting to Feed Hungry Seniors: Diane Chambers’ Story

Diane Chambers carefully selected about 25 of her hand-painted bright watercolors of flowers, streams and lush trees and took them to a local Asheville, North Carolina, arts and crafts fair with the hope of selling them. Diane had never sold any of her artwork before. In fact, she had only recently gotten back to painting […]

True to his word, he was on his deathbed by the middle of August. My mother called me early in the morning, and since I lived nearby, I went right up to their apartment.

My brother and sisters arrived during the morning. I stood by his bed, talking to him and running my fingers through his hair, until I had to go to a doctor’s appointment.

When I got to the office, there was a call from my sister that Dad had died just as I had been leaving the apartment complex parking lot.

The next day, we all went with Mom to the undertaker to arrange the funeral. My brother took us to lunch after our appointment. As we were walking up to the door of the restaurant, we noticed some coins on the bricks. When we picked them up, we found a quarter, a dime and two pennies — 37 cents. We all knew then that Dad was okay and watching over us!
