New York City hosted its annual Climate Week in late September, and Prince Harry attended multiple events in Manhattan. The Duke of Sussex participated in several events across Manhattan, two of which were dedicated to honoring his late mother, Princess Diana. To learn more about these events and the kind words Harry said in regards to his mother, keep scrolling!

The Diana Award event at NYC climate change

Harry’s first event was The Diana Award recipients' banquet. The award, established in 1999 by former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, honors young people for their humanitarian work.

In 2024, the award still stands and was given out during NYC Climate Week on Monday, September 24, to Chiara Riyanti Hutapea Zhang from Indonesia and  Christina Williams from Jamaica.

“The courage that you have gives me hope because every single one of us needs courage in order to move the dial and create positive change in today's world,” Harry told the recipients. “Thank you to you guys for giving me—and probably a lot of other people in this room—hope. Now we need to listen, constantly, listen and then act on the advice and the vision that you have because otherwise it’s your future that's been stolen, and that is unacceptable.”

Harry also shared with Zhang and Williams: “I know my mom would be incredibly proud of you. Not just you, but all of the award winners. Your activism and your compassion are two things that are so true of how my mum led her life and what she believed in, and the way you do it is incredible. So thank you.”

    The HALO Trust event

The second event honoring the late princess was hosted by none other than The HALO Trust, a charity that Diana actively supported before her passing.

“As you know, the HALO Trust work in Angola [Africa] mattered a great deal to my mother,” Harry acknowledged on stage. “Carrying on her legacy is something I take incredibly seriously.”

The HALO Trust event was held to try to clear out the land mines on the Okavango River in Botswana, Africa, to which Harry said, “This essential cross-border corporation recognizes that this priceless natural asset belongs to all people. Clearing these mines is about more than just physical safety. It's about community, and that sense of peace improves well-being. The work being done in Angola will undoubtedly have a profoundly positive effect on the lives of its people and all those who visit its natural beauty.”

The rest of Prince Harry’s time at NYC Climate Week

After he paid tribute to his late mother, Prince Harry still continued to campaign for a more protected Earth at different events across the city. His brother, Prince William, was also in attendance virtually, but the two paths never crossed despite them being at The United Nations (UN) just hours apart.

It is unclear what Harry said in his in-person time there, but during his virtual speech, Willaim told people “If we are to keep this planet liveable for our children and grandchildren, we must act urgently .”

We must act to save our rivers , oceans, savannas, mangroves and forests, as well as the communities that protect and live alongside them.”
