October is National Book Month and to commemorate the event, Pizza Hut is set to serve up 1 million free pizzas between the 1st and the 30th.

If this seems like an unusual promotion for a pizza restaurant, think again. Pizza Hut’s commitment to national literacy is 40 years strong since its BOOK IT! program was founded in 1984.

"I'm incredibly proud of what the BOOK IT! program has achieved over the past four decades," said Carl Loredo, Pizza Hut’s U.S. President . "It's inspired more than 70 million children to discover the magic of books, helping to build a lifelong love of reading. As we're celebrating 40 years, we're excited to invite readers of all ages to rediscover the joy of reading — one book (and pizza) at a time."

To redeem your free pizza, insert the code “BOOKIT40" when ordering a pizza online or on the Pizza Hut app. The offer will run through October 30th or until the 1 million free pizza sales are made.

The delicious rewards don’t stop there as customers can now also order the BOOK IT! Bundle to satisfy their cravings and help fund the program. This new menu item is available online and on the Pizza Hut app and includes two large one-topping pizzas and breadsticks.

A portion of the sales from each BOOK IT! Bundle sold will help support the BOOK IT! program.

BOOK IT! is a free program created in 1984 by Pizza Hut. It aims to uplift and encourage childhood reading in homes, schools and communities across the United States.

Now, nearly 40 years on, BOOK IT! is the largest and longest-running corporate-supported reading program and they are committed to turning “have to read” into “want to read,” according to their mission statement .

BOOK IT!’s school program is open to PreK-6th teachers at public, private and charter schools. Pizza Hut rewards students for achieving certain reading goals throughout the school year.

Reading goals are set by teachers based on their students' reading abilities and can be broken down by the number of pages, minutes or books read. Once students have successfully completed their goals, they will receive a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut.

No stranger to serving their customers in creative ways, Pizza Hut’s 1 million dollar pizza idea is one of several unique promotions offered by the brand in recent years.

In 2023, Pizza Hut teamed up with Chain—an LA-based nostalgic fast food pop-up —to create a collection of exclusive spice blends in a limited-edition shaker inspired by Pizza Hut’s iconic lamp logo.

The collection included Pizza Hut’s ‘Make it Pepperoni’ seasoning and Chain’s ‘Everything Pizza Shake.’ Both were advertised as tangy additions to popcorn, pasta and vegetable dishes.

Pizza Hut also engaged with their media-loving fans when they collaborated with Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey Productions to promote Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem .

Last summer, the company released specialty-themed pizza boxes and a mobile game inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe. Pizza Hut even tested “Underground Deliveries” in New York City for a limited time to promote the film.
