They year has brought many trends into the fashion space: wide leg pants , midi skirts , ballet flats , bow details and (what we consider one of the best!) cozy loungewear. Back in the day, we would never have left the house in sweatpants, sweatshirts, pajamas or other types of loungewear. But these days, it's not only the norm, it's considered trendy and chic—and we're all for it. Plus, the trend has come a long way from just leggings and T-shirts—with endless styles like wide-leg joggers, teddy quarter zips, satin sets and knit pairings, it's easy to find a piece that's comfortable and also makes you feel confident. We tapped celebrity stylist Eric Himel for his expert advice on the best loungewear for women that are not only cozy and comfy but ultra-chic too.
What is loungewear?
Loungewear includes a wide range of styles, from joggers and hoodies to yoga pants and silk sets. It is, as the name suggests, what you would wear to lounge in. Whether you are relaxing at home, spending time with friends or family or running errands around town, loungewear is a great way to keep you stylish without sacrificing warmth and comfort: essentially, loungewear is fashionable pajamas you can wear wherever and whenever you want. Himel explains that loungewear was "a natural progression from the trend of wearing workout clothes that were not for working out," also known as athleisure.
What fabrics should you look for in loungewear?
When it comes to different fabrics, there isn't a "one size fits all" with loungewear. It really is up to personal preference, as every material and style looks and feels different on anyone. Generally, most loungewear pieces are made of cotton, nylon, modal, spandex, satin, knit or fleece, with maybe a few standard fabrics mixed in like polyester. Himel says the goal of loungewear is to make you feel comfy, so therefore soft fabrics with some stretch and breathability that aren't too restricting are key. 1. Breathable wide-leg loungewear
The wide-leg style is all the rage—it's figure-flattering and offers easy-breezy mobility! Try it out with these charcoal yoga pants that feature breathable leg room and a thick waistband for extra coverage. Pairing it with a cream, teddy sherpa quarter zip keeps it casual and cozy, while matching slipper clogs tie in the cream color.
We can't get over this beautiful satin lounge set that looks ultra-luxe and expensive but will only set you back $26. It has a large front pocket on the top for a touch of textured detail and a drawstring waistband to make the bottoms adjustable. If you get chilly in the short sleeves, throw on a cozy tie-belt robe over it and slip on a pair of your favorite fuzzy socks.
Looking for a loungewear set that will put you in the festive spirit even if you are relaxing at home? Enjoy time with family in this loose-fitting, comfy red lounge set. Add some cute accessories like a cream and black fuzzy socks and black slipper clogs that can be worn around the house or out to run errands.
For the ultimate bang for your buck, look for a 3-piece loungewear set, like this one that comes with pants, a tank and robe. The all-navy ensemble can be dressed up with gold accessories like a claw clip and chunky hoops.
Have to dress up but want to feel cozy and warm? You'll feel like you're wearing pajamas but look camera-ready with this lounge maxi skirt and elevated V-neck sweater. The soft hues complement each other perfectly and the fabrics blend beautifully together. Dress it up even more with cozy sherpa wedges and muted gold bangle cuffs.
This loungewear dress is one of the most flattering loungewear picks you will ever find. It's part of the Padma Laksmi collection with Bare Necessities, and we're convinced it was designed with comfort top of mind. It fits just right, feeling loose enough that it doesn't look baggy but doesn't uncomfortably cling to skin, but form-fitting enough to showcase curves. Even more, it shows off a hint of skin with an open tie back. Spice it up with cheetah-print slippers and statement gold earrings.
You can never go wrong with a classic quarter zip, and we're obsessed with this one from Loft that's made out of lightweight, breathable rayon, polyester and spandex. It looks luxe and feels high quality. Pair it with a pair of wide leg sweatpants, and tie hair out of face with a coordinating silk scrunchie. These cozy heart fuzzy socks are the perfect addition to complete your look.
Looking to add a pop of color into your loungewear? Go for a colored set! We love this gorgeous pink set that's roomy and loose, and great if you suffer from hot flashes thanks to its lightweight material and short sleeves. If you get chilly, throw on a lounge cardigan and comfy slippers.
Feel like you just rolled out of bed in this charcoal grey loungewear jumpsuit, but look ready to take on the day whether that's running errands or hanging around the house. We love how it cinches at the waist and has long sleeves to keep arms warm. If you're heading out and need extra warmth, toss on a puffer vest and cozy slip-on clogs.
Another one of favorite colored loungewear sets, this blue tank, pants and robe set has everything you need to feel cozy all day. If you want to dress it up, we think pearl details complement this shade of blue beautifully.
An all-neutral ensemble is a great place to start if you're looking to buy your first loungewear set. You can wear the top and bottoms together for a matching look, or take one and pair with a pop of color or different shades of neutrals. It creates a truly versatile loungewear outfit. We love this neutral shawl as well, which is not only comfortable but won't feel too hot since it's short sleeve. Slip on a pair of tan sherpa booties if running errands, and put in gold earrings for a classic touch.
