A piping hot pizza fresh out of the oven — there is nothing better! And the good news is, you can easily make it yourself, no special pizza oven required. The secret: a skillet! Baking pizza in a skillet ensures that the crust cooks up extra crispy outside, yet perfectly chewy inside. That's the genius of our skillet pie recipe. It's simple to do and it's so much better than takeout!

We top our delicious pizza with tomato sauce, sausage, peppers, onions and plenty of cheese. For convenience we use refrigerated pizza dough, which makes it a snap to whip this pie together. (You can use our quick two-ingredient DIY dough if you prefer.) It smells heavenly while it's cooking, and it tastes even better! Watch our video and see how easy it is to make. Then give it a try. We guarantee you'll be hooked on making your own pie from now on. You may even want to celebrate with a pizza party!

    Yields

    4 serving

    Ingredients

    • 2 (4 oz.) links Italian sausage, casings removed
    • 1/2 yellow pepper, cut into strips
    • 1/2 cup sliced onion
    • 1 (15–16 oz.) pkg. refrigerated pizza dough, at room temp.
    • 1 Tbs. olive oil
    • 2/3 cup pizza sauce
    • 1 1/2 cups shredded gouda cheese
    • Fresh parsley leaves (optional)

    Instructions

Cut sausage links into 4 pieces each. Coat nonstick skillet with cooking spray; heat over medium heat. Add sausage pieces; cook, stirring occasionally, until no longer pink in centers, 10 min.; transfer to plate. Add pepper and onion to same skillet; cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 7 min.; transfer to plate.

Coat cast iron (or ovenproof nonstick) skillet with cooking spray. On lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 13” round. Fit into skillet stretching about 1” up side; brush with oil. Bake until starting to brown, pressing dough down if it puffs up, about 8 min.

Spread sauce on top leaving 1/2” border. Sprinkle with 1 cup cheese. Add sausage, peppers and onion, then sprinkle with remaining cheese.

Bake until baked through, edges are golden and cheese is bubbly, 12–15 min. Transfer to serving plate. If desired, garnish with parsley leaves.
