When the Amerigol LATAM Cup drops the puck this week, it will be another step in the growth of women's hockey.

What started as an event to help grow hockey in Latin America, has expanded to welcome teams from across the globe. This year that includes eight women's teams.

In Pool 1, Puerto Rico, Lebanon, Caribbean, and the Chile Condors will face off, while Pool 2 includes Argentina, Columbia, Egypt, and the Mexico Warriors.

"The tournament was formed for Latin America, but our philosophy is that hockey is for everyone, and we want to grow the game and make it accessible to everyone,” Juan Carlos Otero, the President of Amerigol International Hockey Association told NHL.com . “How could we say hockey is for everyone and not allow these teams that are coming from same situation or worse than Latin America and not allow them to participate in the tournament? These places are trying to grow the game and develop it. To me, the more the merrier. The more diversity we have creates a better event.”

Columbia won the 2023 IIHF Women’s Development Cup last November beating Argentina 6-2 in the final.

The puck drops on the LATAM Cup August 21 in Florida with the championship game scheduled for August 25.
