Convicted terrorist re-sentenced to 27 years in prison after 2012 downtown Chicago bomb plot
A man convicted of attempting to detonate a purported bomb outside a crowded Loop bar has been re-sentenced to 27 years in prison.Adel Daoud of Hillside was serving a 16-year sentence for the September 2012 incident, but federal prosecutors appealed the sentence, saying it was too lenient.They had asked the judge to impose a 40-year sentence, but a 27-year sentence was decided Friday.Last year, Daoud was denied compassionate release to tend to his allegedly sick mother.In 2011, when federal agents began tracking then-west suburban teenager Daoud, investigators say he was looking to blow up 29 potential targets.The Hillside teen went...
Fermilab to Close Temporarily in August Due to Budget Issues
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory will close a significant part of its operations from Aug. 26 to Sept. 8, WTTW News has confirmed. Employees will be forced to take vacation during that time in order to be paid, and some research will be paused. Fermilab will also be closed to the public. The shutdown is an effort at closing a budget shortfall, a spokesperson said.
Schaumburg man sentenced for cell-phone store robberies
A Schaumburg man has been sentenced to 26 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for robbing two cellular phone stores in DuPage County. Isa Al Ahad, formerly Stephon Little, 31, was convicted of robbing at gunpoint a Wheaton Sprint store in 2019 and a Hinsdale Verizon Wireless store in 2022.

Bronzeville Mariano's could be sold off in Kroger-Albertsons merger
Bronzeville’s Mariano’s could be sold off amid the pending $24.6 billion megamerger of Kroger, its parent company, with the grocery giant Albertsons. Located at 3857 S. King Dr., the Bronzeville grocer is one of eight Mariano’s and Jewel-Osco stores slated to be sold off to C&S Wholesale Grocers, according to a list released earlier this month. If the parent companies secure federal approval for the merger, C&S willpurchase 35 stores across the Greater Chicago Area for $2.9 billion.

Steve Grzanich has the business news of the day with the Wintrust Business Minute. United Airlines isn’t the only Chicago area company impacted by the CrowdStrike outage. McDonald’s and and Metra also reported problems. Three Metra-Union Pacific routes had delays that the transit agency blamed on on the CrowdStrike outage. An update of the cybersecurity program took down systems being run on Microsoft computers and devices. It’s unclear how McDonald’s was impacted but it reportedly involved customer service.
