Future manufacturers and marshmallows: Sherrod Brown visits engineering camp for kids
Twelve-year-old Matthew Ward likes to work with his hands and said he’s interested in going into a career where he gets to build things. This week, Matthew got to weld metal flowers, construct pens, and engineer a marshmallow gun all while learning about careers in manufacturing. The weeklong camp was a part of the Wood County Advanced Manufacturing Camp, an initiative spearheaded by the office of U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s (D., Ohio) to give students in fourth through eighth grade the chance to learn about career opportunities and hear from local experts. “I love what this community does in manufacturing, and I know if these kids get more interested in manufacturing, their parents, grandchildren are more likely to live in northwest Ohio,” Mr. Brown said.

First Solar dedicates 1.3M-square-foot facility in Wood County
A research and development center believed to be the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere was commissioned Thursday by First Solar Inc. The Jim Nolan Center for Solar Innovation encompasses 1.3 million square feet in Wood County’s Lake Township, near First Solar’s other Perrysburg-area properties. That project and its upcoming perovskite development line, planned to be commissioned at First Solar’s Perrysburg campus later this year, together represent nearly another $500 million of investments in northwest Ohio. They are expected to create 300 new jobs, mostly at the Nolan Center, the company said. The new research and development facility is dedicated to the late James “Jim” F. Nolan, a former member of First Solar’s Board of Directors and the architect of the company’s cadmium telluride semiconductor platform. A private dedication for the family is planned.

Habitat for Humanity of Wood County dedicates Northwood residence
Habitat for Humanity of Wood County will hold a dedication and community celebration for a new home that has been built for a Northwood family. The event, at 5 p.m. July 24, will be at 1943 Owens St., off West Andrus Road. It will include a home tour and refreshments. Northwood Mayor Edward Schimmel will speak. Project sponsors included First Solar, FedEx, Northwind Group, Rosenboom, D.S. Brown, and Adient. More than volunteers donated more than 2,000 hours of labor to complete the project. The home is Habitat for Humanity of Wood County’s 54th project. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.
Driver dead, passenger seriously injured in motorcycle crash on Ohio Turnpike
WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — One person is dead and another is hospitalized with serious injuries following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash Tuesday afternoon in Wood County. The crash happened at 4 p.m. on the Ohio Turnpike near I-280 in Lake Township, according to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
