MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WOOD) — A week-long music and entertainment festival is kicking off in Muskegon Heights on Monday.

The annual Muskegon Heights Festival in the Park at Rowan Park goes through Saturday. Each night is dedicated to different genres of music including R&B, gospel, rap and the blues. Muskegon Heights native Tabitha Duncan will perform with her acclaimed R&B group Kut Klose . Organizers said this is the group’s first-ever show in the Muskegon area.

The event has been around since 1982, and its longtime organizer says it’s about bringing the community together for something positive.

“We hear a lot of publicly about the bad things that happen in Muskegon Heights, we got a lot of good stuff going on. And people need to know that and feel comfortable about coming in(to) our community,” Mimi Rankin, chairperson for the Muskegon Heights Festival in the Park, said.

In addition to concerts, there will be food trucks, movie nights, activities for kids and an annual parade, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday morning. Duncan will serve as the grand marshal.
