    Verizon outage in Kalamazoo may have affected 911 calls

    KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Verizon customers in the Kalamazoo area experienced an outage Thursday afternoon, causing disruptions to calls, including to 911.

    According to Verizon’s outage tool , data, voice, text and wireless home internet were limited in Kalamazoo.

    “There is a known issue in this area and we are working on a solution,” Verizon wrote on its website.

    The disruption happened Thursday around 2:40 p.m. and Verizon estimated it would take 12 to 24 hours to restore the service. As of 10 p.m., Verizon’s outage tool said there were no issues in Kalamazoo.

    The “major service degradation issues” could affect people using Verizon Wireless, Spectrum Mobile, US Mobile, Xfinity mobile, Lively or Tracphone, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a social media post .

    Deputies advised customers who were unable to make emergency voice calls or text 911 to connect to WiFi and retry or use a different device with another provider. Verizon’s website also suggested using Verizon WiFi calling .
