GRAM hosts back-to-school event to inspire creativity

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Parents and kids were able to get ready for the start of the school year at the Grand Rapids Art Museum on Saturday.

The GRAM Goes Back to School event started at 10 a.m. with an artist market hosted by students and alumni from Kendall College of Art and Design. The event also featured hands-on art making, mobile haircuts and complimentary pastries.

The first 200 K through 12 students were able to grab a colorful backpack and fill it up with a pencil case, notebooks and a Grand Valley State University folder.

Organizers said the event was a way to help families get ready for the school year and help them get creative.

“It’s important to showcase art towards and also encourage art making in kids K-12. I think it opens their mind and … their brains to playing. That’s a big thing here at GRAM is it’s all about play and it’s all about how can we engage with kids and how can we encourage them to play,” Supriya Gupta, membership coordinator at the GRAM, said.
