KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Western Michigan University students are waving goodbye to their parents as they move into campus this week.

WMU Housing and Residence Life officials told News 8 on Thursday that the process was going smoothly thanks to scheduled times for moving in, something the university launched during the pandemic.

‘Nervous,’ ‘excited’ GVSU students move in

“We’re just really excited to have our students back on campus. Campus looks really different in the summertime. And so today kind of kicks off that vibrancy. We just love having our students on campus. Interacting with our families is absolutely amazing,” Housing and Residence Life Director Roshona Porter said.

Some changes to the Kalamazoo campus include the reopening of Henry hall after interior updates like new bathrooms, carpeting and furniture. The facelift is expected to accommodate students as the Valley 3 residence hall is demolished to make space for a new residence hall.

Some first-years students said leaving home is bittersweet, but they are excited for the school year.

“It’s a little sad. At the same time, it’s like it’s a good thing because it’s new beginnings and moving on in life,” freshman Antoine Jones of Grand Rapids, who will study aviation at WMU, said.

“I’m excited. It’s a long journey,” Jones’ mom Tasha Irvin said. “It’s my second oldest going off to college, and it’s hard being a single mom and pushing your kids to do the right thing for yourself in life.”
