GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl face potential life sentences after being accused of plotting to kill the girl’s mother.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday that the two teenagers were arraigned earlier this month on multiple charges related to an incident that happened on July 14 in Eastpointe.

Prosecutors say the 17-year-old entered the woman’s home and strangled her “before being confronted and fleeing.” The victim survived the attack and is expected to recover.

“After an extensive investigation by the Eastpointe Police Department, it was determined that the 14-year-old daughter of the victim planned the murder with the 17-year-old male,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement .

Both minors face one count of conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder, a felony charge with a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. The 14-year-old was also charged with solicitation of murder and the 17-year-old was charged with assault with intent to murder. Both charges carry the possibility of a life sentence.

The 17-year-old was given a $2.5 million bond, while the girl was given a $1 million bond. Both were remanded to the custody of the county’s Juvenile Justice Center. If released, both defendants must wear a GPS tether, be restricted to home confinement, have no access to the internet and have no contact with the victim.

In a statement, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido will seek to charge them as adults.

“The alleged actions of these juveniles are not just illegal but also incredibly dangerous. This level of criminal activity is unacceptable, and we intend to treat it with the severity it deserves,” Lucido stated. “That’s why we are seeking to charge these juveniles as adults — because when you commit adult crimes, you face adult consequences.”

Both defendants are scheduled to return to court Tuesday for a probable cause hearing.
