MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — A judge set a long maximum sentence for a man who shot and killed his daughter-in-law in Muskegon nearly two years ago.

Phillip Smith, of Egelston Township, was sentenced Thursday to 16 to 170 years in prison plus two years for a weapons charge. Egelston will get credit for 23 months served, court records show.

Egelston pleaded no contest in April to second-degree murder and felony firearm after being charged in December of 2022, according to court records.

Man charged, ID’d after October Muskegon shooting

He shot and killed Ashley Ridge, 30, of Muskegon two months earlier on Ray Street near E Holbrook Avenue in Muskegon. It’s not clear what led up to the shooting but Muskegon police said it was an isolated incident at the home and called it a family dispute.
