GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Michigan man has been arrested for entering the U.S. Capitol building during the riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

According to court documents, on Jan. 12, 2021, the FBI got a tip that Adam Christopher Mancuso posted two images on Facebook: one was outside the Capitol on the day of the riot and the other was inside.

Investigators reviewed his Facebook pages and found multiple photos of him wearing the same “Hatchetman hat,” the document said.

The FBI reviewed security footage of inside the Capitol and learned that Mancuso entered the building shortly before 3 p.m. through the Senate Wing door. The footage showed him stopping to take a selfie before heading down the hallway towards the Crypt, court documents said.

He could also be seen grabbing a sign that another person had left that read “America First, Never Give Up, Never Surrender” with a picture of the American flag. The footage, the court document said, showed a police officer confronting Mancuso, who placed the sign back against the wall and continued heading towards the Crypt. He was then seen in the Hall of Columns, where he took photos and videos. The document said that he was then seen heading to the House Carriage Door and leaving the building around 3:04 p.m.

A photo included in a federal court document shows Adam Mancuso entering the Rotunda Lobby on Jan. 6, 2021.

Around 3:20 p.m., he went back inside the building through the East Rotunda Doors, documents said. Investigators said that by this time, officers had already removed the rioters from the area and they were trying to get back inside.

Court documents said that Mancuso could be seen on surveillance video working his way through the crowd, stopping to use a vape and taking a video. He then took off his backpack and put on a gas mask. He then made his way to the front of the crowd and recorded a video on his phone. At one point, the documents said, he is pushed chest-to-chest with an officer who pushes him away.

Around 3:27 p.m., he and the rest of the crowd can be seen being pushed out of the building by officers.

During the investigation, agents went to the address listed for Mancuso and watched him for two hours, court documents said. They confirmed that he was the same person in the photos posted on Facebook and in the Capitol surveillance video.

Mancuso was arrested Wednesday in Laurium in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on charges of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; knowingly, and with intent to impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of government business or official functions; disorderly conduct in a capitol building or grounds; parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a capitol building.

At his first court hearing Wednesday, he was given a personal recognizance bond and has since been released while the case moves forward.
