SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — An ice cream shop that has been a summer staple in South Haven for decades is closing.

On its Facebook page , Sherman’s Dairy Bar announced this season would be its last.

“We have loved being part of your summer traditions for 66 seasons, and we know many of you have fond memories of a scoop at Sherman’s,” read the Facebook post.

The ice cream shop encouraged patrons to visit before the season ends on Oct. 26 and asked fans to share their favorite memories in the comments. Many reminisced on childhood memories and say generations of their family have visited.

“Sherman’s has been a staple of my family for as long as they have been open. Thank you for being a delicious part of our family history. Your ice cream will be greatly missed,” said one commenter.

“South Haven will never be the same and neither will I,” another commenter added.

Blue cows have become synonymous with Sherman’s, even though they are recent additions to the shop.

Sherman’s first began in 1916 as a dairy farm, delivering milk to the people in South Haven. The business began making ice cream in 1958.

In 2019, the shop stopped making its own ice cream and Hudsonville Ice Cream stepped in to take over production. It used Sherman’s family recipes to sell in the shop as well as in other shops around the Midwest.

Sherman’s did not say why it was shutting down in the post.

Family Businesses are past down through generations. If the children of a generation have no desire to work the business either you sell or shut down. Everretts, Overton, Hansens ring a bell?
