WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — The Wyoming Police Department says an assault suspect was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after an hourslong search.

Around 11:30 a.m., the suspect — a man wanted for assault — ran away from police in the area of Clyde Park Avenue SW and Oakcrest Street SW, according to a release from the police department.

Police spent hours searching for the man. Around 2:45 p.m., police say they found him on the 3900 block of Clyde Park Avenue, near Brockton Woods Drive SW, and took him into custody.

Video shared with News 8 by viewer Mya Sullivan shows a man sprinting across a yard with police hot on his tail. One officer dove and caught the edge of the man’s shirt, bringing the suspect to the ground, the video shows. Officers quickly handcuffed him.

The police department said it informed local schools of the search.

Amid the heavy police presence, Wyoming Public Schools Superintendent Craig Hoekstra told News 8 that Oriole Park Elementary, which is on 40th Street SW between Clyde Park Avenue SW and Burlingame Avenue SW, went into “passive lockdown” as a precaution. Activities continued as usual, but no traffic was allowed in or out of the building.

St. John Vianney Catholic School, located off Clyde Park Avenue SW south of 40th Street SW, also went into lockdown, according to a message sent to parents.

At both schools, students were safe, leaders said.
