GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was taken to the hospital following a shooting in Grand Rapids on Friday, police say.

Shortly before 2 p.m., officers with the Grand Rapids Police Department were sent to the area of 11th Street NW and Turner Avenue NW after receiving reports about someone being shot in a vehicle.

Responding officers found the man inside a crashed vehicle. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said.

Police investigate a shooting on 11th Street NW and Turner Avenue NW on Sept. 6, 2024.

Winstrom said that it appeared that the shooter was in a separate vehicle that left the area.

“One of the things that we’re looking at is the possibility that this is crime-related, maybe drug-related because this is somewhat, actually, it’s a very safe area, and it’s somewhat secluded from eyes,” Winstrom said. “The potential being that this was the location chosen by individuals to meet up for some sort of illicit activity. It’s something that we’re looking into and it’s a possibility but so that could very well mean why we’re here.”

Officers are looking for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call GRPD at 616.456.3400 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.

Winstrom said that there is no threat to the public.
