SIDNEY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a man was injured as he got children out of a burning home near Sheridan early Monday.

The fire was reported around 2:30 a.m. at a mobile home on Amsden Road near the intersection of Derby and Muskrat roads in Sidney Township, northwest of Sheridan.

The Sheridan Fire Department said in a post on Facebook that the man, 24, noticed the fire and woke up a woman. She grabbed two children from a bedroom and escaped outside. The man went into another bedroom to get three more kids. That’s when he sustained burns to his legs, back and arms, the fire department said. He and the children got out of the house before firefighters arrived.

The man was conscious when he was taken away in an ambulance, firefighters said, but the department did not have his condition from the hospital.

The children raged in age from 1 to 8 years old. None were injured. The woman was also uninjured.

The fire department said that by the time crews arrived, flames were showing through the roof. About 20 firefighters from Sheridan and neighboring Stanton responded to dump about 7,000 gallons of water on the fire and put it out.

The home is a total loss, the fire department said. The residents said they will stay with friends and family.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, the fire department said, but the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal will investigate because of the man’s injuries.
