WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — A Wyoming man gunned down a woman outside his home on Sunday and then threatened a second woman who confronted him about the early afternoon shooting, court records show.

Shortly after the deadly shooting, a firearm and ammunition were found in the accused gunman’s garage, court records show.

On Tuesday, Anthony Lamar Buxton was arraigned in Wyoming District Court on multiple charges, including open murder, in the death of Kanivia Howard-Browley, 25.

He is also charged with three weapons offenses and felonious assault for threatening a woman with a handgun moments after the shooting, court records show. Buxton, 48, who has felony convictions dating back three decades, was denied bond. He remains in the Kent County jail.

The shooting played out in front of Buxton’s home on Bluebird Avenue SW near 36th Street about 12:40 p.m. Sunday, Wyoming police said.

Witnesses told police Buxton and Howard-Browley “were arguing and that they heard three gunshots and saw Kanivia on the ground … and Anthony holding a black and silver firearm,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

Video from a home three doors away shows Buxton chasing the woman into the street “and firing at her three times,” records show, going on to say that “one of the rounds fatally struck Kanivia and she passed away at the hospital a short time later.”

Before Wyoming police arrived, a friend of the victim showed up and found Howard-Browley injured and on the ground.

“She confronted Anthony who was still in possession of the firearm and he pointed the gun at her and threatened to shoot her as well,” according to the probable cause affidavit.

Buxton returned to the garage and placed the gun in a dark-colored bucket, police said. “The firearm along with matching unspent rounds was located” in the defendant’s garage, records show.

The weapons charges filed against Buxton include possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, which carries a five-year penalty. He was ineligible to possess a firearm because of an armed robbery conviction in 1994.

Buxton has a probable cause conference scheduled for next week in Wyoming District Court. If convicted of the murder charge, Buxton faces up to life in prison.
