ROCKFORD, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a man was arrested for domestic assault after a short foot chase in Rockford.

The Rockford Department of Public Safety said shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, it received a report of a domestic assault at an apartment near E. Division Street and Wolverine Boulevard NE.

The caller told police that the suspect had a gun and was last seen walking northbound from the apartment, according to a new release.

The suspect was found around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday outside a nearby restaurant. The suspect ran away from police and was arrested in a parking lot. A K-9 unit found the handgun in a nearby wooded area, the release said.

Due to the proximity to Rockford Public Schools campuses, police said a school was placed under a shelter-in-place order. After the suspect was arrested about 10 minutes later, the school resumed normal operations, the release said.
