GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Organizers kicked off the 32nd year of the Grand Rapids Public Schools Turkey Trot outside the Van Arena in downtown Grand Rapids Thursday.

The goal of this year’s event is to break last year’s record of participation and fundraising. According to organizers, 5,834 participated in the race last year and raised more than $100,000.

“Proceeds from the race go to Grand Rapids Public Schools scholars athletes to offset the pay-to-play costs for K-12 athletics and giving all scholars and students an opportunity to participate in school athletics free of charge,” GRPS superintendent Leadriane Roby said during Thursday’s event.

Businesses and organizations can learn more about sponsoring this year’s Turkey Trot online .

The race will be held on Thanksgiving morning — Thursday, Nov. 28 — with the starting line in front of Van Andel Arena on Fulton Street.

Those who are interested in participating can register and find more information online .
