KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Two people are recovering after an early Saturday morning shooting in Kalamazoo.

Around 12:45 a.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were sent to the area of Kimbark Avenue and Michigan Street after receiving reports about shots fired in the area.

In home security video shared with News 8 by Brayden Taylor, who lives in the neighborhood, a bang can be heard, followed by screaming. Video from another camera shows people running from behind an apartment building.

When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old with apparent gunshot wounds.

KDPS said they were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening and have since been released.

Several college students in the neighborhood told News 8 that the area is no stranger to the occasional party — but they’ve never seen anything like this.

One Western Michigan University student said he was sitting on his porch when the shooting happened. He called the situation surprising but said he feels safe in his neighborhood of two years.

“It was pretty calm until the incident happened, and then students kind of just fled very quickly down Kimbark Avenue trying to flee the scene,” Taylor said. “Usually, it’s pretty quiet on the weekends….I’ve never really felt in danger at all during my time living here.”

Police called the shooting an isolated incident. As of Saturday morning, they said they did not have any suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to call KDPS at 269.488.8911 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.
