HOLTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Holton Varsity Football is ending its season early, according to a letter sent to families by the district’s superintendent.

The letter explained that the decision was made due to a lower number of varsity football players, ongoing injuries and player safety.

“This difficult decision was made after careful consideration and we know the impact this has on our players, coaches, families, and community. We want to see a strong Red Devil Varsity Football program. Ultimately, to make that happen we have to also protect player development, prevent injury, and work to increase participation,” Superintendent Adam Bayne said in the letter.

As of Friday, when the letter was sent out, all varsity West Michigan Conference football games have been canceled. The two remaining varsity non-conference football games against Atherton and White Cloud, Sept. 27 and Oct. 25, respectively, will be played as scheduled. The letter explained that the schools will have combined junior varsity and varsity teams allowing for all of high school players to play.

Holton’s junior varsity team will play the originally scheduled Western Michigan Conference games, the letter said.

Due to this decision Homecoming week will be pushed back one week to Sept. 23-27.

“All planned activities and spirit days will remain the same just one week later from the original dates,” the letter said, except the Powder Puff Football Game, which will continue as scheduled on Sunday.

The homecoming festivities on Sept. 27 will include the homecoming parade, the alumni tent, the Class of 1974 recognition, the crowning of the homecoming court and the results of the spirit competition. The dance will be held on Sept. 28.
