SUV shot at in Kalamazoo; 1 killed, 1 hurt

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — One person was killed and another was hurt when their vehicle was shot at in Kalamazoo Saturday morning.

Around 4:10 a.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were sent to the area of N. Westnedge Avenue and Florence Street after receiving reports that a vehicle had been hit by gunfire.

Responding officers learned that a white GMC SUV with four people inside was hit by gunfire while it turned south onto Westnedge Avenue from Florence Street.

The driver was hit in the torso and a passenger was hit in the leg, KDPS said. The four people drove themselves to the hospital.

The driver died, KDPS said. Their name has not been released.

The passenger has injuries that are not considered life-threatening, KDPS said.

Officers are looking for the shooter. KDPS said that it is following several leads and does not believe there is a threat to the public. Later Saturday morning, a News 8 crew saw a crime lab unit on scene.
