GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids police cruiser was involved in a crash on the city’s northeast side early Monday morning.

The Grand Rapids Police Department said the crash happened shortly before 3 a.m. at the intersection of Michigan Street NE and Lafayette Avenue NE near Grand Valley State University’s Cook Devos Center for Health Sciences.

According to a GRPD news release, it started when officers saw a white Kia driving recklessly near Fulton Street and La Grave Avenue. The suspect was driving at a high rate of speed and disregarding stop signs and traffic signals. Police said they did not initiate a pursuit.

The police department said the car was heading northbound on Lafayette when it drove through a red light, hitting the eastbound cruiser.

According to police, three juveniles were inside the stolen car. Two of them tried to run away from the scene but were quickly found. One had to be extricated from the vehicle. All three were taken into custody and treated at the hospital.

The officer was also taken to the hospital. No serious injuries were reported, according to GRPD.

Police believe the car was recently stolen and are trying to get ahold of the owner.

    The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Kohl at 616.456.4513 or tkohl@grcity.us, Office Thompson at 616.456.3320 or athompson@grcity.us or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.

Michigan and Lafayette were closed for several hours as authorities investigated and worked to clear the scene. The roads have since reopened.
