GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Two police officers from Mid-Michigan are being credited for stepping up after a pregnant woman went into labor.

The Roscommon County Sheriff’s Department announced the news on social media. Around 9:30 Thursday morning, a couple from Houghton Lake drove to the sheriff’s office. Chris Meir called for help, saying his significant other, Jessica Schaffer, was in active labor.

“Chris told officers he was parked in front of the sheriff’s office. Multiple sheriff personnel and other agencies that were in the area went out to assist until the ambulance arrived,” the post stated .

“Luca Jameson Meir was born at 9:43 a.m. … Congratulations to the family,” the post read.

Martin told News 8 affiliate WPBN-TV that it was just another unpredictable day of serving in law enforcement.

“That’s the beauty of our job, you never know what’s next. Speaking with my partners, officers will go their entire careers without experiencing something like that and it was a thrill to be able to experience that and to be able to provide my assistance when needed,” Martin said.

He continued: “Baby’s doing great, mom’s doing great. They were very happy with our assistance and we were able to give them a gift of some flowers and diapers and a card from the sheriff’s office.”
