OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The gun that went off inside a Costco near Kalamazoo was a Michigan State Police officer’s state-issued service weapon, authorities say.

The MSP officer, whose name was not released, was off duty Sunday when the gun “accidentally discharged” from inside her purse at the Costco on Century Avenue off Michigan Avenue in Oshtemo Township.

The officer was shot in the hand. One person injured their ankle and another person, who was not involved, “fainted during the chaos” and was injured, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office says. Undersheriff Jim VanDyken said the officer was treated at the hospital and then released. The two others were treated on scene, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident, but MSP said its internal affairs division will also review and investigate to determine if there were any policy violations.

VanDyken also noted that officers licensed by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards do not have to have a concealed pistol license to carry a concealed weapon.

Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting told News 8 on Tuesday that the case was still with deputies and that his office expected to get it when they were done to decide what, if any charges, were appropriate.
