GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man who got less than $700 in a Grand Rapids bank robbery has been sentenced to a little more than four years in federal prison.

The robbery happened in June of 2023 at the Comerica Bank on Monroe Avenue NW in downtown Grand Rapids. Police arrested Timothy Andrew Crane two days later.

Crane, 31, is no stranger to the criminal justice system. He’s had several prison sentences since 2010 and was on probation for unarmed robbery when the bank heist occurred.

According to court records, Crane passed a note to a teller announcing the robbery and demanding $1,200. He got away with $690.

A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced Crane to four years and two months in prison followed by two years of supervised release. And he’s on the hook for $690 in restitution.

Court records indicate Crane has grappled with mental health and substance abuse issues.

“Mr. Crane turned to drug abuse to cope with his homelessness and mental health struggles,’’ his attorney wrote in a sentencing memorandum. “Mr. Crane needs all forms of treatment to get ahold of his various issues.’’
