GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Two West Michigan housing projects have received funding from the state.

The Michigan State Housing Development Authority Board has approved funding for six affordable housing projects. In Grand Rapids, $16.6 million is set to go toward building the 1309 Madison Apartments project.

The project will include 45 housing units across two buildings, with a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments. Three of the apartments will be accessible units.

The project will be for those making between 30% to 80% of the area median income.

In Allegan County, Mystic View Apartments in Pullman is receiving $9.1 million to renovate its 40-unit development.

The funding comes as West Michigan, like the rest of the state, faces a housing crisis. Kent County needs to add 35,000 housing units, while Allegan County is facing a gap of around 6,200 housing units, according to housing needs assessments conducted by Bowen National Research.

The board also approved funding for housing projects in Detroit and Oakland County during its September meeting.

“The Board’s action this month is a reflection of the steady progress we’re making to increase housing supply in urban and rural communities,” MSHDA CEO and Executive Director Amy Hovey said in a Tuesday release. “With over 300 housing units created or preserved this month alone, we’re working harder than ever to improve Michigan’s housing ecosystem.”

the cost breakdown for mystique community gardens is this, 9.1 million divided by 40 units comes out to $227.500 PER APARTMENT UNIT! and how does this break down? roughly speaking, between the federal and state government 60% will go to federal and state administration costs to administer (state labor) the program, then to the charities directly administering the process, who takes 15-20% of the 40% left for their administration costs of implementing the program leaving 20-25% for the actual program service!! full amount given to a well run charity directly producing tiny houses could produce 150 12 x 40 400sqft parkmodel homes, or 1/2 size mobile homes perfect for a single, single parent or young or retired couple at $40,000 or $6,000,000 which would leave 3.1 MILLION for rough in plumbing and electrical and site prep for 150 new units mobile home style lots on state land, saving our taxpayers TENS OF MILLIONS wach year vs private run facilities millions in taxes alone!!
