Michigan rescue team sent to North Carolina amid flooding

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan rescuers — including two from Grand Rapids — are responding to North Carolina as Tropical Storm Helene moves across the Southeast, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

Facing flash floods and landslides, North Carolina asked for out-of-state help, according to a release from the Michigan State Police.

In response, the MSP Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division deployed Michigan Task Force 1’s Type I Swiftwater Team on Thursday.

The 19-member team, which includes responders from 10 Michigan fire departments, was expected to arrive late Friday afternoon, according to state police. Two of its members are from Grand Rapids, a spokesperson for MSP told News 8.

The team can conduct water rescues, respond to trapped residents and drivers and help rescue animals.

“We anticipate dangerous conditions but stand ready to assist when other states are in need of help,” said Capt. Kevin Sweeney, deputy state director of Emergency Management and commander of the MSP/EMHSD, in a statement. “We are proud of Michigan Task Force 1 and the reputation it has built as a live-saving resource. The state of North Carolina made a direct request for this specific team. We wish them a safe and successful mission.”

The rescue team plans to be in North Carolina through Oct. 4.
