GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — After seven months, the section of Cesar E. Chavez Avenue between Clyde Park Avenue and Hall Street is back open.

City leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning to celebrate the street’s reopening. The ceremony took place on Cesar E. Chavez Avenue between Roosevelt Avenue and Cordelia Street.

The $7.5 million roadway improvement project started on March 4. Crews tore up the road and installed new water mains, a storm sewer system and lead water pipes underneath the street.

Then they repaved the street, put in new sidewalks, on street parking and curb extensions at intersections. There are also new fiber glass streetlights, five rain gardens and 80 street trees along the road.
