TROWBRIDGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A number of people were hospitalized and one could face charges after an SUV crashed into a tractor pulling a hay ride trailer south of Allegan on Saturday evening, deputies say.

It happened around 7:25 p.m. on M-40 near 110th Avenue in Trowbridge Township. The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office said that the southbound SUV hit the tractor pulling the hay ride, which was also going south.

A News 8 crew at the scene later saw the trailer on its side, part of its metal siding bent inward and a section of the wooden bed broken, and an SUV with the front smashed in.

The sheriff’s office said “several” injuries were reported among the hay ride passengers and they were hospitalized. Three people in the SUV sustained injuries, deputies added. The sheriff’s office did not provide specifics about the injuries, but called the crash a “serious injury crash” in a release.

The sheriff’s office said speed and alcohol were believed to have been factors in the crash. Its investigation is ongoing, but the release indicated at least one person was expected to face charges.

M-40 was closed while emergency responders were on the scene.
