GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — As communities prepare to celebrate Halloween with trick-or-treating and other events, the Grand Rapids Police Department has released some tips and recommendations to keep safe.

GRPD recommends that anyone trick-or-treating do so from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Other tips include turning the front porch light on at dusk, only visiting homes with a lit front porch and having a parent or adult chaperone or going in a group, if possible.

While walking around, GRPD says it’s a good idea to wear light-colored or reflective clothing and make sure that any masks don’t obscure your vision. Walk on the sidewalks, carry a flashlight and stick to one side of the street before going to the other is also recommended.

“Do not go into any stranger’s home or car even if you are offered candy,” GRPD said in a release.

Once candy or foo has been collected, GRPD says kids should not eat it until an adult checks it.

For anyone driving around during trick-or-treating, GRPD wants to remind you to be observant when driving through residential neighborhoods.
