Man gets prison for deadly shooting in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A man will spend decades in prison for a shooting that killed a man in Kalamazoo last year.

Laquay Woodford-Paige, 37, was sentenced Monday to between 28 and 60 years in prison for second-degree murder, between 14 and 30 years for discharging a firearm at a building causing death, between five and 10 years for discharging a firearm at a building, and three two-year sentences for three counts of felony firearm, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said.

The sentences stem from the November 2023 shooting on Woodbury Avenue near Ada Street that killed Kemberlyn Trotman, 35. Witnesses told KDPS officers that the shooter, later identified as Woodford-Paige, fired two guns at a group of people and houses. Officers found Trotman with a gunshot wound to his head. He died at the hospital.

Woodford-Paige was convicted by a jury in August.

“We hope this sentencing provides some closure for the family of Mr. Trotman and reinforces our commitment to seeking justice for victims of violent crime,” KDPS Capt. Danielle Guilds said in a Tuesday statement. “We remain dedicated to holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring the safety of all residents. This outcome reflects the diligent efforts of law enforcement, prosecutors, and the community working together to combat gun violence.”
