GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The star of a ‘90s television show is encouraging women to get preventative care during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Danielle Fishel, who played Topanga on Boy Meets World, was diagnosed with breast cancer in July. By sharing her story, she hopes to encourage other women to get their screenings.

“Topanga would have been the friend, in our friend group, to have nudged you to go and get  your mammogram. I’m happy to stand in her shoes and be the person today telling you to do the same,” Fishel told News 8.

A recent Wellness Matters Survey found that 70% of Millennials admit they put off getting a health checkup or screening.

“I’m happy to be that person to be able to pay it forward and to hopefully help guide people in to getting their exams. Because if I could even save one person from having to find out they have Stage 3 or Stage 4 cancer, it means the world,” Fishel said.

Fishel recommended doing research on the breast cancer Reddit page, but cautioned that a cancer experience will be different for each person.

“Your experience with cancer is not gonna be just like someone else’s, but hearing other people’s experiences can be helpful and so I encourage you to reach out to people in the cancer community,” Fishel said.
