HOMER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A suspect wanted for a domestic disturbance died by suicide Wednesday afternoon, deputies say.

Around 12:48 p.m., officers with the Albion Department of Public Safety responded to a “domestic disturbance” in Albion.

A 28-year-old suspect from Homer Township who police say had an outstanding felony warrant for assault, left the scene. Deputies with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office went to the suspect’s house in Homer Township, where they saw him arrive home around 1:14 p.m. He then ran into a nearby cornfield, deputies say.

A drone and K-9 unit searched for the man and a neighbor reported seeing him with a handgun, “running between fields,” the sheriff’s office said. A deputy soon spotted him near the intersection of 25 ½ Mile Road and R Drive South in Homer Township, where the suspect “appeared from behind a tree displaying the handgun,” according to deputies.

“Within seconds, the suspect fired a single shot, resulting in his death by suicide,” deputies said.

Sheriff’s office detectives are investigating. Anyone with information should contact the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office detectives at 269.781.0880 or Silent Observer at 269.781.9700.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call 988 for the National Suicide Hotline .
