KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A new partnership between Western Michigan University and Discover Kalamazoo aims to get students more engaged in the community.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the WMU Student Center Wednesday afternoon for Discover Kalamazoo’s visitors’ center. The space, on the first floor of the student center, will be staffed with a Discover Kalamazoo employee Monday through Thursday to engage with students and visitors alike.

Discover Kalamazoo President Jane Ghosh says the visitors’ center at WMU will help students engage with the community while they’re at school. It’s also a spot to meet visitors where they are.

“Western Michigan University is the second most visited place in Kalamazoo County. This is not just where students are. It’s also where the visitors are,” Ghosh explained. “And by being here, we can engage the students and we can work with our partners to help the students discover so much wonder that there is in Kalamazoo County and all of our passion for the county. And it can be a great spot to meet visitors where they are and meet people where they are and help them understand what else there is to do, besides what the university has to offer, throughout the county.”

According to Ghosh, this is the first time Discover Kalamazoo has opened a visitors’ center outside of the airport.
