No-contact health advisory lifted for St. Joseph River after wastewater overflow

THREE RIVERS, Mich. (WOOD) — A no-contact health advisory for the St. Joseph River has been lifted Three Rivers after 50,000 gallons of untreated wastewater made its way into the river early this week.

The no-contact health advisory was issued for the St. Joseph River from Broadway Street Bridge to South Constantine Street Bridge following “complications” as the city transitioned to a new pump station on Broadway Street.

The city said it realized the problem at 3:30 p.m. Monday. It had a bypass set up within two hours.

Water samples collected on Wednesday showed that “the St. Joseph River now contains levels of fecal coliform generally expected to be present,” the city’s wastewater treatment plant said in a release. The test results were returned on Thursday.
