Hope Lutheran to host Red Cross Bloodmobile
Hope Lutheran Church announced that at least 22 blood donors will be needed when it hosts a visit from the Red Cross Bloodmobile, noon to 5 p.m. Friday, July 19, 211 Parr Road, Woodburn. Donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 with parental consent, and they can make an appointment by contacting the church at 503-981-0400 or info@hopewoodburn.org or by registering directly at redcrossblood.org and scrolling down to Hope Lutheran under Woodburn’s 97071 zip code. The entire donation process, including registration, donation and resting, requires about an hour. It is recommended that donors drink plenty of water the day before donating, consume a hearty breakfast and lunch with foods rich in iron, such as red meat, fish, poultry, beans, broccoli, spinach, raisins or prunes. Further advice recommends avoiding caffeinated beverages or fatty foods before donating, and to wear loose fitting sleeves to accommodate the donation process.
OHSU study finds benefits of using telehealth to help treat opioid addiction
Telehealth can ease the stigma and barriers for people as they seek and enter treatment for drug addiction, a new study from Oregon Health & Science University found. The study’s release comes as Oregon is grappling with a fentanyl addiction and poisoning crisis, with providers and counties planning new programs that emphasize treatment and recovery instead of jail time. More than 1,000 Oregonians died of opioid poisoning in 2023, an increase from 280 in 2019, according to Oregon Health Authority data. ...

Woodburn Police seek suspect in Walmart incident
Woodburn Police reported Wednesday that officers are seeking the identity of a suspect believed to have walked out of Walmart with $100 he had stolen from a customer. Police reported that on June 24 at the Woodburn Walmart, 3002 Stacy Allison Way, an elderly customer said that she requested $100 cash back from a self-checkout machine but mistakenly left the money in the machine. A store employee said the male suspect took that money, and when he was confronted by an employee who planned to turn it over to store management, the suspect claimed the money was his and left the store. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, roughly 40 years old and about 5-foot-8 to 5-10 and between 170 and 190 pounds. He left Walmart driving a dark colored SUV. Anyone who may have information about the suspect should contact WPD Officer Jorge Gaspar at 503-982-2345 and refer to case number 24-8274.

Oregon among 27 states with illnesses linked to mushroom-derived candies
Oregon is one of 27 states with cases of a severe and acute illness associated with a brand of candies that contain a potentially harmful chemical found in mushrooms, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
