Yes, Independence Day is just over the horizon, and some other warmly anticipated area festivities, such as the Hubbard Hop Festival, are also within sight.

But it’s not too early to begin planning for the early-August mingling gem: National Night Out .

The annual neighborhood gathering event aimed at public safety invariably takes place on the first Tuesday of August. This year that means NNO falls on Aug. 6.

Woodburn Police Department has already sent out appeals for neighborhoods to sign up for block parties. These casual gatherings connect neighbors with neighbors while also drawing public safety personnel for visits, usually police or firefighters, but sometimes public representatives stop in for visits as well.

Some communities, such as Gervais, Monitor and Mount Angel, hold community-wide celebrations. Donald has seen festive events within specific localities of its hamlet. Others, such as Aurora, focus on traditional events like the Aurora Colony Days to achieve the same ends while also inviting visitors into the community.

Regardless, anyone interested in hosting a block party is encouraged to contact their local city hall and get registered. That ensures a visit from public safety personnel, and it gives you and your neighbors something to plan and look forward to.
