A preliminary investigation determined the 23-year-old driving a Lexus GS northbound on I-5 when he rear ended a Toyota Camry near milepost 222 at 2:09 a.m., OSP said in a news release.

The 37-year-old driver of the Camry was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries and a passenger, Scott Alan Palmer, 53, of Camarillo, California, was declared deceased at the scene.

The driver of Lexus had minor injuries and was arrested, OSP said.

Traffic on the freeway was impacted for about six hours as OSP troopers assisted by the Linn County Sheriff's Office and the Oregon Department of Transportation investigated and cleared the crash scene.
