UVM composting class starts in August
Most Vermonters know that composting is an essential part of household waste management. Vermont state law banned food scraps from the trash in 2020. But composting is more than just landfill diversion. It is a way to recycle nutrients at your home, providing a free resource to feed the soils of your garden, lawn and other plants. Done correctly, composting will not attract bears, rats and other wildlife.

Film festival brings together national, state and local creators
Last weekend saw the launch of the Williston Film Festival presented at the Isham Barn Theatre. The two-day noncompetitive event featured several short films, as well as full length features including “King Coal” directed by West Virginia native and Peabody and Emmy winner Elaine McMillion Sheldon, “Joonam” by Vermonter and Sundance Film Festival award-nominee Sierra Urich, and “The Farm Boy” by actor and filmmaker George Woodard, who lives and farms in Waterbury, Vt.

This week, U.S. Senator Peter Welch and 13 colleagues urged the Ambassadors of Israel and Egypt to help critically ill Palestinian children leave Gaza for medical treatment and improve access to life-saving care for children in need. The senators emphasized the importance of not hindering injured children from receiving necessary medical care and called for cooperation to ensure safe passage and increased access to treatment. Meetings with the Ambassadors were also requested to further discuss facilitating safe passage for children in need.

Children at Sensations In Learning daycare and preschool have put their garden to use this summer providing greens for the Williston Community Food Shelf. Until this year, the garden had been simply a source of gardening practice and education for the children. This year, the school resolved to provide fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs to the food shelf.

Q&A with Dartmouth Cemetery trustee Petra Sergent
Dartmouth Cemetery trustee Petra Sergent plays a crucial role in maintaining the cemetery’s headstones. Established in 1771 by Eleazar Wheelock, the Dartmouth Cemetery, also known as the Town of Hanover Cemetery, was maintained by the Dartmouth Cemetery Association from 1845 to 1943, according to Dartmouth News. In 1943, the Association ran out of funds and signed the deed to the Town of Hanover, who has managed the grounds since. Every other week in the spring and summer, Sergent — also a member of the Dartmouth Cemetery Conservation Group, formed in 2022 for headstone cleaning and preservation — ventures to the cemetery for maintenance. The Dartmouth sat down with Sergent to discuss the DCCG, the cemetery’s history and the lives of those buried on campus.

Suspect wanted in 2023 Burlington shootout appears in court
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - A Detroit man wanted in connection with a Burlington shootout in 2023 appeared in court Friday. John Austin, 30, pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault charges connected to the shootout on Riverside Avenue in May 2023. The Burlington Police say one of the bullets in the early morning shootout punctured a gas line prompting the evacuation of nearby residents. One of the bullets also went into a home. None was injured.
