This past 4th of July, a group of kids from Detroit entered an abandoned warehouse in Detroit with a load of commercial fireworks in tow. The 15-time major champion shot 79-77 at the British Open at Royal Troon to miss the cut in his third major this year and later boarded a plane to get back to the United States to help his son Charlie begin preparations for his first USGA championship. The U.S. Junior, which begins Monday at Oakland Hills in Bloomfield Township, has a field of 264 competing in two rounds of stroke play that will be whittled down to 64 for match play starting Wednesday. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday.
Whitmer on the Dem ticket could knock over political dominoes from Lansing to Detroit
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer consistently and insistently says she does not intend to run for president. Just about the only elected official I can think of who has been equally unwavering in their public pledges about their political ambitions is Joe Biden, who said he would never stop running for president. Uh-oh ... Biden's...

Hilary Golston needs a kidney, but she doesn't know how to ask. It's not for her. It's for her mother. And as a reporter and weekend anchor at WJBK-TV (Channel 2), she holds a powerful bullhorn. "But that's my professional side," Golston says. "This is personal. I don't want to...

Two of the Detroit Tigers' top prospects are moving on up. Outfielder Max Clark, who the Tigers selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft, and shortstop Kevin McGonigle, who the Tigers picked 34 spots later, have both been called up to High-A West Michigan. The...
Peace-loving folk singer quits race against Oakland Sheriff Bouchard but stays on ballot
Amrit Kohli of Ferndale in no way resembles a cop. Clad in sandals and a George Floyd “Say his name!” t-shirt, the Nigerian-born Kohli is a software contractor but says he much prefers living his dream: folk singer and peace activist. He favors total change in policing, starting with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. If elected sheriff, he’d put a stop to what he says is racist law enforcement and the pursuit of non-violent offenders. And he’d “defund” the department, diverting money to mental-health programs.
AFC team could give former Lions sack leader another career lifeline
When the Detroit Lions signed him in 2021, Charles Harris was a first-round draft pick bust with his career on the ropes as he headed to his third team in as many seasons. He resuscitated his career that season, leading the Lions with 7.5 sacks as he set career-highs in tackles (65), tackles for loss (10) and quarterback hits (16).
Ex-Red Wing with 20-goal potential finally off the market
For a player who has averaged nearly 20 goals in the past two seasons and is only 27, there didn’t seem to be much interest in Daniel Sprong. The leading scorer last season among available free agents finally is off the market after signing a one-year, $975,000 contract with the Vancouver Canucks.
